Strange Stories from around the world ...
Pope Paul VI was presented with an alarm clock
in 1923. It served him faithfully for 55 years, waking him promptly at 6
o’clock every morning. On Sunday, August 6, 1978, the alarm clock rang, of
its own accord, at 9:40 p.m., the very moment that the Pope died.
On a Friday night in November, 1976, Renee
MacRae set out on a car journey with her three year old son, from Inverness,
Scotland. Later that night, the car was found burning a lay-by just 11
miles away. Renee and her son were nowhere to be seen. They have remained
missing ever since.
On October 3, 1955, at dawn, the 70 ton Joyita
sailed from Apia, Samoa heading for the nearby Tokelau Islands in the
Pacific Ocean. A little over a month later it was found drifting in the
open sea. There was no sign of the people who had been on board and no
clues as to what had happened to them. The fate of the people on the Joyita
is still one of the great mysteries of the sea.
The Hope Diamond was stolen from the eye of a
Burmese Buddha in 1688 and carried with it a curse on all who would own it.
The man who stole it, French explorer Jean Baptiste Tavernier, went mad.
Marie Antoinette wore it and died on the guillotine. Lord Francis Hope
acquired the diamond in 1830 and gave it to his wife. She left him and died
in poverty. Fifteen other owners of the diamond have died in mysterious
circumstances. These deaths imply something more than mere coincidence.
In 1880, Malcolm Macmillan, a famous British
publisher, climbed to the top of Mount Hymettus while in Greece. He turned
to wave to his friends down below, then vanished and was never seen again.
His publishing company put up a reward following his disappearance, but he
was never seen again.
In 1938, Mary Carpenter was boating on the
Norfolk Broads, England, with her husband and children. Suddenly she burst
into flames. Her body was quickly reduced to ashes. Her family and the
boat were unharmed, and no one can offer a sensible explanation of what may
have caused this strange happening.
