With the pain of last Sunday's 32-29 loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII beginning to subside, Carolina Panthers fans can now start reflecting on what a marvelous and miraculous season it really was.
In training camp, nobody gave the Panthers a chance to reach the Super Bowl just two years after finishing 1-15.  So a three-point loss to the Patriots in the 2004 Super Bowl can hardly be deemed disappointing, no matter what comments were coming out of the Carolina locker room following Sunday's loss. This season had more thrills and more excitement than Carolina's previous eight seasons combined.

Arena Football League

The AFL is a lot different than the NFL, but can be just as entertaining. All you may need is a little patience because this is not your father’s football. Before you go out there and watch your first arena game live or at home, let me give you a brief history of the league. The AFL only plays on a 50-yard field. There are no sidelines. All there is are high-density foam pads that still hurt when you hit them. There are no punts, 4th and 15 from your own four: field goal time. There are eight players on the field and everyone except the quarterbacks and a specialist play it iron man style. Every snap is quick and routes are tight. The scores are like basketball scores. The New York Dragons once scored 99 in one game back in 2001. The AFL is non-stop action that keeps the fan in the entire game. Think blitz when you think of the AFL.
The AFL came about in 1987 with just four teams: Denver, Washington, Chicago and Pittsburgh. They are long gone. There are now 19 teams in the league. The average attendance in 2003 was the third largest in the league’s short seventeen-year history. They now have a national television contract with NBC and it should only get better.

Greensboro Prowlers
The Greensboro Prowlers, one of the arenafootball2 league’s original 15 teams, are entering their fourth season of operation. In 2003 the Prowlers will be under the direction of Head Coach Steven Jerry, a North Carolina alumnus that is entering his first year with the team. Greensboro has sent numerous players to the Canadian Football League, enhancing the careers of many young athletes.

Carolina Cobras
After an off-season overhaul, the Cobras enter the 2004 season poised to battle for the Eastern Division title. AFL standouts Jarrick Hillery, Damon Mason and Travis Reece join returning Team MVP Bernard Holmes on a roster that features over 30 new faces. The team's new coaching staff headed by former AFL Coach of the Year Eddie Khayat includes two former AFL head coaches in John Gregory and Ron Selesky.
