The Boys and Girls Club of the Sandhills is asking the community for assistance in their tutorial program.  Volunteers are needed daily from 3 - 4pm to provide assistance with reading and homework.

 

 The Classical Concert Series This cultural organization is planning for the 2003-04 season and needs assistance with subscriptions for the upcoming series.  Individuals with computer skills and an interest in the fine arts are welcome.  Volunteers may serve at home at their convenience

 

 The Convention and Visitor's Bureau needs assistance in providing one-on-one information about Moore County to potential tourists and travel agencies.  The Bureau promotes the Village of Pinehurst, Southern Pines and the Aberdeen areas.  Greeters and clerical assistants are needed.

 

 Drug-Free Moore County, Inc needs volunteers to provide clerical support as well as to assist with its various substance abuse prevention programs including "Parent-to-Parent", "Project Graduation", after school programs, drug-free dances, peer help and student assistance teams.  Plans are currently underway for "Project Graduation" and assistance is needed for mailing preparations for the students as well as for the event scheduled at First Health Fitness Center on the evening of May 25.

 

First Health Moore Regional Hospital has many ongoing programs needing volunteer service.  Opportunities are available in activities with patient contact as well as staff assistance in many departments.  There are other opportunities that involve physical activity and those that are sedentary.  There are even opportunities available in evenings such as the information desk and on weekends such as helping to take pictures of the newborns on Sunday morning.  Drivers are also needed for the Road to Recovery program as well as with their shuttle van.  Call for the most up to date opportunities.

 

Friend-To-Friend is a non-profit organization, which offers help to all persons affected by interpersonal abuse (Sexual Assault or Domestic Abuse).  Staff and volunteers team together in helping to ease the immediate pain of such abuse and facilitate emotional healing.  Volunteers are needed to assist in community and parent education, as court advocates, and as a member of the 24-hour Personal Response Team that offers assistant when victims are in the hospital.

 

The Guardian Ad Litem program needs volunteers willing to be trained to represent children who come before the courts because of abuse or neglect.  These volunteers serve as advocates for the child and try to promote what is in the best interest of the child as they go through the system.

 

 The Habitat for Humanity is an intergenerational ecumenical Christian movement whose goal is to build low-cost homes fro sale to qualifying low-income families.  Construction workers are needed to help with two sites currently under construction in the Aberdeen and Southern Pines area.  Workers are needed fro Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays in the morning hours.  Assistance is also needed with scheduling the volunteer workers.

 

Keep Moore County Beautiful is dedicated to keeping Moore County's roadsides and waterways free of litter and actively promotes recycling.  Volunteers may participate in one of many programs or special events.  Assistance is also needed in the office with mailing, membership, and computer data input.

 

The MAST Charter School needs tutors for reading and math students in 6-8th grades.  These tutors would work on-one with students to listen to them read and to help with math skills.

 

Moore Buddies is seeking mentors to be matched with youth that are at-risk or involved in court related issues.  Training and support for the volunteers is available to adults who wish to make a difference in a child's life for a one-year commitment.

The Moore County Department of Aging is sponsoring a "Friendly Visitor" program to check on homebound seniors in the county on a monthly basis.  Also, the department is looking for interested volunteers to deliver meals to the homebound.  Routes are available in Carthage, West End, Vass, Cameron, Southern Pines and Robbins.


The Moore County Emergency Management Services
is in need of clerical assistance in the office for 1/2 day two days a week.  This person would be preparing information to be distributed throughout the county.


The Moore County Historical Association
is dedicated to the preservation of the heritage of Moore County and North Carolina through its facilities and a variety of programs and services.  Volunteers are needed to serve as tour guides to provide pertinent information about the history of three homes in Southern Pines - The Shaw House, the Garner House and the Sanders Cabin.  Guides are needed for Tuesdays through Saturdays 1-4 pm.  New volunteers will receive training and information and will be placed with an experienced docent.

The Moore County Literacy Council has several programs within the county of promote literacy in all ages.  The Grandparents Reading Club provides storytellers to local elementary schools.  Especially needed are volunteers who are able to speak other languages to provide one-on-one tutoring for adults and children.  Other programs include: Active Voice, a program which pairs high school students with adult mentors to write articles for publication; Adult Basic Education; Books for Kids, program in which volunteers read to students while waiting for appointments in the Moore County Health Department; and TOPS, a program  in which students are matched with volunteers to receive individualized help with reading.

 
Moore County Schools
is looking for volunteers to assist in classroom activities and reading programs within elementary schools in all parts of the county.  Also, elementary schools are asking for volunteers to serve as mentors to be matched with students who may be at-risk.  There is a great need in the Northern Moore area for a Spanish translator to assist with teacher/parent notes on Tuesday morning.

The Moore County Veteran's Services office is looking for individuals to assist in promoting services for Moore County veterans.  Volunteers would serve from the Carthage office location and hours are flexible throughout the week.

Prancing Horse Center for Therapeutic Riding provides horseback riding for people with disabilities.  Volunteers are needed to help with riding sessions and to help with special events throughout the year.

St. Joseph of the Pines Nursing Center is seeking volunteers to assist with activities, visit residents, clerical functions, and to help make nametags with a special machine.  Drivers are also needed to transport people to doctor's appointments in Chapel Hill.  Volunteers are also needed to read to and play with children at the Day Care Center.

The Sandhills Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking volunteers to help with greeting visitors to the area and giving information about the area.  Other duties include answering the telephone preparing mailings, and light clerical duties.

The Sandhills Children's Center is an inclusive developmental Day School which provides care for special needs as well as typically developing pre-school age children.  Volunteers are needed as classroom volunteers, shoppers, administrative assistants, and grounds assistants.

The Sandhills Food Bank is a private, nonprofit organization that fights hunger while eliminating food waste.  It is a branch of the Food Bank of North Carolina, one of six  Second Harvest food banks in the state.  Volunteers are needed to organize and shelve food.  For those who prefer not to do any lifting, helping is also needed in assisting customers.

The Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care helps to meet the emergency needs of food, clothing, an financial assistance of Moore County residents in distress.  Volunteers are needed to serve as greeters, screeners, food packers, food purchasers, clothing sorters, clothing client assistants, transportation drivers and workers in the resale shop.  Service hours are flexible Monday- Friday 9:00am-3:00pm 

The Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) is an organization dedicated to helping the small business community through no-fee advice business counseling and workshops.  Volunteers receive specialized training offered by the local chapter.  Especially needed are workshop leaders and retired accountants.  Other knowledge requested of volunteers computer, banking and secretarial experience.

The Southeastern North Carolina Radio Reading Service is a special radio station which brings blind, visually impaired, and physically handicapped people news and other material that sighted people can get from newspapers, magazines and books.  Volunteers are needed to read and record for this service.  The recording studio is located at Sandhills community College.  The hours are flexible and training is provided.

 Sterling House Assisted Living would like to have assistance with exercise, crafts and outing with the residents.  The times needing assistance are Tuesday-Fridays from 10:00 - 4:00.  A volunteer is needed 2-3 times per week and the hours are flexible.

 The Sunrise Preservation Group is dedicated to preserving the Sunrise Theater in Southern Pines.  Events are help throughout the year including the Sunflix Cinema Series and other SunEvents.  Volunteers are needed to help with Box Office sales and in the Concession area.

Transportation needs are great among the senior citizens in the county.  The RSVP office would like to have a pool of volunteers to call upon to drive seniors to doctor's appointments, therapy, and other locations within and occasionally outside of Moore County.

Moore County has been selected as a site for a Senior Environment Corps and will receive assistance from the Environmental Alliance for Senior Involvement (EASI) to from a group of interested individuals to assist with environmental projects around the county.   Projects such as water quality monitoring and well inspections are in the planning stages.  Education and training will be ongoing as well as formation of new projects.

The RSVP Technology Team is forming to provide non-profit agencies and others in developing web sites and updating information.  Training will be provided and volunteers will assist at various agencies with technology needs.
